Best No Contract Phone Service Carriers for 2014

2013 brought an immense amount of competition to the cell phone service arena!

Luckily for consumers, this brought out the best no contract phone service plans the cell phone industry has ever seen!

Between so many MVNO’s and the main carriers own prepaid no contract offerings, it’s almost impossible to keep up with the latest and greatest in no contract plans!

Don’t sweat it. We’ll catch you up and let you in on the best service plans your money can buy for 2014!

“The Big 4″ Major Carrier No Contract Phone Service Plans

While AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile have a business model that loves to keep consumers signing those new 2-year contract extensions (and re-signing), they’ve also provided their own competitive offerings for their prepaid plans as well.

Reminder: This is geared for the major brand no contract service plans and doesn’t include many of the other MVNO providers that offer other packages that might fit your needs!

Verizon No Contract Service

Verizon now offers no contract plans and even allows you to purchase a device from them with some discount if you set-up autopay for your monthly bill. For $99, you can get an iPhone 4. Sure it’s a little bit older model but the price point is right on and a strong offering!

AllSet Plan

Service Information

  • $45/Month
  • Unlimited Talk/Text
  • 500 MB of Data

You can additionally add extra data onto your plan as essentially a 2nd service package on top of the 500 MB of data already included.

  • $5 – Extra 500 MB – Expires after 30 Days
  • $10 – Extra 1 GB of data – Expires after 90 Days
  • $20 – Extra 3GB of data – Expires after 90 Days.

This is basically like having a backup for data  that you prepay for.

Handset Information:

You can BYOD as long as it’s a Verizon handset that isn’t on the lost or stolen list and has a clean ESN and IMEI number.

T-Mobile No Contract Service Plans

T-Mobile rocked the boat at last years CES show and was first to the punch on really offering out no contract service plans. Their offerings cover heavy data usage all the way down to less expensive options. The cheapest plan being a bit more expensive than other carriers lowest no contract price, at $50, still has an advantage with the extra data that it provides.

  • All of the plans below include unlimited talk, more than enough text messaging and data. (Text and data is not unlimited!)
  • $80/month – Unlimited Talk/Text & Nationwide 4G LTE Data. (Includes 5GB of Mobile Hotspot Data)
  • $70/month – Unlimited Talk/Text & up to 5 GB of 4G LTE Data.
  • $60/ month – Unlimited Talk/Text & 3 GB of 4G LTE Data.
  • $50/ month – Unlimited Talk/Text and 1GB of 4G LTE Data.

While these plans might be a little more expensive, they do include more data than other offerings and you don’t have to sign the ever dreaded 2 year contract.

Handset Information:

You can BYOD as long as it’s either UNLOCKED GSM or a T-Mobile branded device. This makes for a wider arrange of selection and availability on the GSM network.

Take Note:

  • If you bring your own device and it’s not a T-Mobile compatible phone, it’s possible the network bands won’t support T-Mobile’s 4G LTE Network. You might only get 3G.

AT&T No Contract Service Plans

AT&T has previously offered their no-contract service branded under the GoPhone name. While that hasn’t changed, they’ve started to promote in their normal AT&T offerings.

  • $60/ month – Unlimited Talk/Text & 2.5 GB of Data.
  • $40/ month – 500 Minutes, Unlimited Text and Picture Messaging and 500MB of Data.
  • $25/ month – 250 Minutes , Unlimited Text and Picture Messaging – NO DATA PLAN

Additional data for the $60 plan will run at $10 for 1GB, $5 for 100MB on the $40 plan and $5 for 50MB on the $25 plan.

Consumers are really urged to look at their usage before opting into one of these plans.

Handset Information:

You can freely bring any AT&T or unlocked phone to their no contract service plans. Most all unlocked phones have the proper network bands to support their 4G LTE network. (Besides T-Mobile phones)

Take Note:

For those that talk and consume data, what seems to be a cheap offering could end up resulting in using all your data too quickly and paying a hefty price for additional data!

Sprint No Contract Service Plans

Sprint has recently entered into the no contract service plan offerings and has done a good job at offering a competitive price.

Their offering is more geared towards the heavy data user and those who are a walking hot spot. The price tag is intimating , but heavy data users will be hard pressed to get a flat fee with any other provider.

My All In Plan

  • Unlimited Talk and Text and data with no restrictions
  • 5GB of hotspot data included.

Handset Information:

  • You can only bring in a Sprint device that’s clear and free of bad ESN number. While this limits the amount of phones you can bring to the network, Sprint phones are typically the cheapest to buy in the used cell phone market. Mainly, because they’re not able to be exported to other countries or used on other carriers.

Best No Contract Service Plan for you?

It ALL comes down to your data usage! Almost everyone provides unlimited talk and text plans (besides the lowest AT&T $25 no contract plan). With that said, your typical data consumption is where one plan will fit you better than another. It’s important to know what you’re usage is because each no contract service plan data upgrades vary by price (per GB) as well as within the standard package.

  • Heavy Data Consumption – Sprint
  • Budget – AT&T
  • You depend on data but not a heavy user – T-Mobile
  • I just need a little bit of data – Verizon
  • Flexible (fair amount of data, can add more as you go at “discounted” rate but also expires if you don’t use it. – Verizon
  • Family/Business Plan – T-Mobile hands down!

My ultimate choice would be Verizon because my data consumption varies from month to month and being able to add on more data if needed without going without or paying an arm and a leg would be worth the possibility of expiring data.

iCloud Activation Lock Removal Service Scams – Beware!

Are you looking around for an activation lock removal service for your iPhone that’s been locked through iCloud using the find my iphone feature with iOS7?

If so, you’re probably looking for information on if there is even such a service to unlock these locked phones and if this is something that can even be done.

You should be very cautious when looking for companies that say they have activation lock removal service because most all of them are scams!

iCloud Activation Lock Removal Service Scams

To date, Apple has authorized any 3rd party company to be able to bypass this iCloud activation lock. In addition, there has been no legitimate crack, hack or software loophole that’s been found to bypass this besides on an iPhone 4.

Many of these websites that are offering the removal service of iCloud are basically preying on your urgency of the service but are only really selling instructions for bypassing iCloud activation lock. Once you’ve “paid” for this service, you’ll simply be given an instruction manual or a “membership” that includes instructions on how to bypass. However, the information they provide will only work for iPhone 4.

Because you were in such a rush, you won’t have read the fine print and although your credit card company would probably side with you, they’re hoping you will just forget about it. They will make money because of the amount of people who will just forget that they were ripped off.

iCloud Activation Lock Removal Service Companies

Listed below are many of the websites claiming to offer iCloud activation lock removal services. Many are also listed on eBay or you might see them on youtube. The ones on youtube are fakes listed by a 3rd party who says they were able to unlock from the mentioned website, will get some of their buddies to like and +1 the video and then close down comments and ratings.

This is an example of one of them.

Here is an example of another one.

Websites offering the service:

When you look at the page information of this website, you can see that it’s only been active for about 2 months and offering the service for only $12.99. The ONLY way they make money is to trick you into paying for the unlocking of this device which will not work and hope you don’t ask for your money back or file a credit card charge back.

ezVid Screen Recorder Problems – Why I Will Never Use Again!

I’ve had the need recently to create some videos recording my desktop PC and then uploading the recordings to Youtube. EzVid Video Recorder had some good reviews and of course it was free. No trial period or freeware software where I would need to pay after using a certain amount of times or days.

While I really liked using the software, I’ve just uninstalled it and I will never go back to using them again. Maybe the issue was something small and could have been resolved but their help documents and an email to support didn’t help me at all.

EzVid Free Download and About the Screen Recording Software.

  • It’s free
  • It won’t let you “keep” the files on your computer. Rather you have an internal project within ezVid and cannot export it to other programs or file formats directly.
  • You can only upload the recording to Youtube once you’re finished. No big deal because then you could rip it directly from Youtube if you really wanted to.
  • ezvid download free  - You download from their website but it’s not until the very very bottom of the page that you can download the actual file. They try to promote buying a headset and/ or microphone to buy from them and donate before downloading.
  • In fact, they request that you donate before downloading, but it’s not mandatory.

ezvid free download video recording software

After Download ezVid Free and using the Video Recording Software

  • Pretty straight forward to use.
  • You can capture just an area of your screen or select a specific screen if you have multiple monitors.
  • You can record your voice and indicate your using a headset for better recording.
  • You can record up to 720P resolution.
  • You can add some basic text and graphics and what not to spice up your recording.

ezVid Free Video Editing Software Problems and Issues

I had two main problems with the software. First off, I’m using Windows 8 64-bit. My computer is boss and isn’t the issue.

  1. After recording (with voice) it needs to render the video media and the audio recording. SO many times it would crash during this phase. It would take 4-5 minutes and the progress bar would just stop. Don’t rely on the progress bar.
  2. A successful render would happen and then I would have the option to upload the video to Youtube. When I would do so, the video will get up to 48% uploaded and then just sit there. It won’t crash, it won’t error out. Just nothing. I’ve left it sitting for 1 hour before on a short video.

Both of these are just simply a huge hassle. Because if it crashes, many times the video you just recorded will not save properly and you’ll have to record all over again. I’m about at the point where 1/3 videos will actually work from start to finish and upload directly to youtube.

ezvid screen recorder youtube upload screen capture

  • I sent ezVid a message through their support. I followed all the help documents, suggestions and tutorials. I uninstalled and reinstalled. I restarted my computer, updated drivers etc.
  • Does restarting help? Sometimes it would. But nothing fool proof for the long term.
  • They suggested that my internet isn’t “good” enough. Yes it is. It works find for EVERYTHING else that I use. It truly might not be “good” enough, but that would mean ezVid screen recorder simply has too high of a requirement of needing some fiber optic internet line which would eliminate 99% of the population with a computer.

Sorry, but software applications these days are just expected to work out of the box. Sure, it might need a little tweaking …maybe codex or driver update. But I’ve done everything they’ve suggested and I’m just not able to use them anymore.

Today, I recorded the same video showing one of my offshore teams a procedure for work and failed to upload to Youtube 3 times in a row.

If it works out of the gate for you, great! But for me, their support documents and customer support are unable to make this work on my end with “nothing” wrong with my computer.

Don’t fight the application if it doesn’t work. Just get something else. Many other applications out there for free.

How to Check ESN MEID and IMEI with All Carriers FREE!

Verizon IMEI check is important if you’re planning on activating a used device on Verizon’s network.

Maybe you’re looking online on eBay or craigslist and want to ensure the device you’re wanting to buy will be able activate and not be on any lost of stolen list also.

There are many resources available on the internet to check your device but many fall short of giving accurate and full results. In addition, it’s important to understand what to look out for so your not stuck with a device that can’t be activated and be left with a fancy paperweight.

Who Needs to Check ESN Numbers for Verizon?

  • Those looking to buy a used (or new) device on eBay, Amazon or other online marketplace.
  • Local buyers on Craigslist, Kijiji or other online websites that offer advertisements for local transactions.
  • If your BYOB (bringing your own device) to Verizon’s postpaid (contact), prepaid service or one of their MVNO providers (Page Plus, Red Pocket etc.)
  • Those looking to sell a device that was previously their own.
  • Those looking to sell a device that they might have found or “found”.
  • Companies or Individuals who buyback phones for resale including cell phone repair shops, eBay sellers etc.

Why It’s Important to Check ESN Numbers for Verizon?

  • The value of a device that has a bad ESN, MEID or IMEI on Verizon is significantly less than one with a good ESN Number.
  • Why? – Because the device cannot be activated on the Verizon network (postpaid or prepaid).
  • If selling online, then the end buyer might become upset on eBay, Amazon or Craigslist and leave bad feedback or file a dispute and/or initiate a charge back.

Verizon ESN vs MEID vs IMEI – What’s the difference?

Verizon runs on the CDMA network, therefore it usually has an ESN number or MEID number. Technically, these numbers are the same and the are simply a calculated variable of one another. Depending on the manufacture and phone model, MEID is usually listed on the back of the phone under the battery. Most likely because this converted ESN number is shorter in length and is easier to fit and requires a smaller bar code.

  • A Verizon IMEI is really a technical incorrect word to use since IMEI is related to GSM carrier handset identification. However, it’s often used.
  • Even though some Verizon phones include a sim card (usually for the 4G LTE) or come with a GSM slot and are factory unlocked, they all have an ESN/MEID number hard coded into the device.

What Exactly You’re Looking for when Checking a Verizon ESN

  1. Active on a current line  - This is important because if the phone is currently active, the device’s ESN number won’t show as “bad” or “unable to activate”. However the seller after you’ve purchased it from them might not pay their bill or remove the phone from their line which would end up having a bad ESN at a later point in time.
  2. Lost or Stolen List – The device shouldn’t be on a lost or stolen list. This is the main reason a phone is classified as a “bad ESN”.
  3. Contract Obligation Fulfilled – The subscriber on Verizon must have fullfilled their contact obligation in regards to acquiring the specific handset being checked.

The above is usually pretty easy to determine. The largest scenario you want to watch out for is when a Verizon device was just recently used!

Where you can check a Verizon ESN or MEID for Accurate Results

Check with Verizon Directly on their ESN Website Checking Tool or Call Into Customer Service

  • The best place to check Verizon ESN or MEID numbers is directly with Verizon.
  • If you call up, make sure you ask them to check both their DMD (device management database) and the Lost or Stolen List. Ask if the phone was recently deactivated and if their is a possibility the handset could end up turning into a bad ESN device if the user doesn’t pay their bill. They might not give you tons of details and varies by rep but can be done.
  • CALL TWICE, MAYBE 3 TIMES! – I can’t stress the importance of this. Depending on the representative, you could get mixed results.
  • Before I call, I will check on Verizon’s website
  • When checking this site, as long as you enter in the ESN/MEID and click next and do NOT get any sort of error message or trouble page, then the phone should be good to activate.
  • If you get ANY mixed result, then call it in.

When I check on their website, I’ll also take a screenshot of the website saying the ESN/MEID is good for activation, which includes the IMEI/ESN number on the page. This way, incase something happens by the time arrives to me if I ordered from eBay or somewhere online and want to activate it at a future point in time, you’ll have some leverage. (I’ve had and they have the ability to cleanse an ESN but is very rare)

Best 3rd Party Websites to Check Verizon ESN/IMEI Numbers

As I said earlier, you can use these for reference but the best place to check is directly with Verizon!

How to find your ESN or MEID Number from your device

This varies by model but is very easy to do and pretty much standard from most devices.

Check Back Cover Under Battery

For devices that have a batter compartment, this is usually under the battery on the manufactures label.

Finding ESN/IMEI/MEID from an Apple iPhone

  • You can look on the devices sim card tray. Only do this method if you bought the device new as it’s possible if you bought it used or refurbished that the sim card tray was swapped out or not the original from the device.

  • On the back of the device (for iPhone 5, 5s, 5c and future models PAST the iPhone 4s). Again, only do this if it was your original device.

  • Lastly, you can find the ESN/MEID/IMEI from with the iPhone settings

  • With iPhone connected, click Phone Number to rotate through other device information including MEID, IMEI (when applicable), and ICCID.

find-imei-esn-meid-iphone-dial          find-imei-esn-meid-iphone-dial-pad

Finding the ESN/MEID/IMEI from an Android Device

  • Settings>About Phone> Status (it’s usually named “MEID”

Converting MEID to ESN

Many of these techniques will give you the MEID number which may need to be converted, depending on who you’re checking the ESN with or trying to activate the phone through an official post-paid carrier or prepaid MVNO.

Simple Mobile Coverage Map & Service Area Information

Simple Mobile Coverage

Does Simple Mobile have good coverage?

Are you wondering what Simple Mobile Coverage Map looks like in your area and nationwide?

It’s important to understand not only where you’re able to get basic talk and text coverage, but also if you’ll be able to take advantage of 4G LTE speeds if you have this service plan and a phone that allows high speed data.

Simple Mobile Coverage Map for Talk, Text and Data

Shown below is the coverage map for Simple Mobile.

If the map looks a little bit familiar, that’s because Simple Mobile is a MVNO of T-Mobile. Meaning, anywhere you would normally receive T-Mobile service, you’ll have Simple Mobile service. There is no difference what-so-ever. When you dial from a Simple Mobile line, you’re connecting directly to T-Mobile towers.

Facts About T-Mobile / Simple Mobile Coverage

  • T-Mobile has a Personal Coverage Check on their website. You can actually put in your direct address, city, state and zip code and it will tell you if service is available

You simply enter in your zip code and it will tell you the coverage for regular service (talk, text and data coverage) and give you a rating. My area was “Excellent”. If you zoom in on the map, the colors will be in two shades of purple and indicate difference in “Excellent” and “Good”. The lighter the purple color, the further you’re most likely away from a tower and will have lower signal strength and/or lower 4G LTE speeds.

Simple Mobile Coverage for 4G LTE Data Services

The 4G LTE Data speeds are something else! It’s really what has defined mobile data and been the most significant contributor in my eyes on the growth of the smartphone revolution.

Fortunately, most of the carriers have already been investing in this technology and has spread from major cities to less populated areas and suburban America. T-Mobile was a bit behind Verizon and Sprint initially, but their getting much better.

Lookup 4G LTE Speeds in Your City

Opensignal is a good utility to lookup and predict the possible coverage of your 4G LTE speeds by carrier. Opensignal works off users who have shared their data coverage information while in actual use. So while this won’t be 100%, because of a significant following, it can give you an fairly good idea of the most important metrics in your local area. Mainly, if there is 4G LTE speeds in your area.

In the example above, it only shows coverage on some of the main highways and streets. But I know that I get 4G LTE service at my home which shows no coverage heat map over my exact location. But the fact that dozens of recent users have submitted data through this service, simply knowing that there is a heatmap in my city close to me lets me know that I’ll have service coverage.

With that said, overall with discussions with friends in the area, the information in the “Network Rank” on the bottom of the page seems to be spot on with the 5-mile high assumption of 4G LTE speeds in my city.

It’s nearly impossible to predict right down to a specific house.

The main factors for getting 4G LTE speeds in an area that are covered:

  • How close to a cell phone tower you’re located.
  • Network congestion with other users.
  • Phone model (PRL and network settings)
  • Terrain conditions (hills, weather and “noise” of buildings and man made objects)

Find & Buy Used Metro PCS Phones for Sale – Resource Guide

How to Buy The Best Used Metro PCS Phones for Sale

Looking to buy Used Metro PCS Phones for yourself or family member?

Don’t want to pay the expensive brand new price offered by Metro PCS dealers?

No Problem! Finding cheap and affordable used Metro PCS phones is fairly easy if you know where to look and what to look out for. If you can follow a few easy steps and do some basic searching, you’ll be able to find some great deals on Metro PCS phones that fit your budget and are far less expensive that buying a brand new device.

Questions to Ask Before Searching

  1. Do I have a smartphone data plan with Metro PCS? Some service plans require a data package or smartphone service plan in order to activate the phone with Metro PCS. Some other phones cross over into this category and can be activated on Metro PCS network but could have limited data services or functionality.
  2. What is your used phone budget? – More so than the exact budget is to consider that you’re buying a used phones outside of the official selling channels from a Metro PCS store or from their website. If problems with the device happen to surface in the future, you could be out of luck with filing a warranty claim. Always consider this and lower your budget for the phone with the expectation that something COULD go wrong. A great deal isn’t just about what you have today, it’s about how long it will last until you want to purchase a different phone or the phone stops working.

Top Places to Find Used Metro PCS Phones

While some of these channels you might already know about, it’s important to search within these markets for the perfect deal.

Local Metro PCS Dealer Store

It’s always great to check with your local Metro PCS store.

Just about every Metro PCS store that I know will buy back a used phone from a customer who was on the bubble of buying something new in order to give the customer enough total cash to get into a different device.

  • The store makes more money and is commissioned to sell brand new phones and service plans, they usually won’t advertise directly.
  • Therefore they will usually not promote they sell used phones or display them in their store location.
  • Just ASK! … – If the store has any used phones at a discount that anyone might have returned.
  • Call around to other Metro PCS store locations and ask if they have used phones for sale. This could save time and money on gas driving around.
  • Use your any and all used metro pcs phones you’re using now or have laying around for trade-in credit.

Remember to use this technique to your advantage! You probably already have a used phone from Metro PCS. See if your local store will give you some trade-in credit for your used device so that you can buy one of the used metro pcs phones he might have.

Buy Used Metro PCS Phones on eBay and Craigslist

Of course, eBay is always a good resource. Most of you probably already have an eBay account and know how to use the site. While price is usually the primary purchasing factor, there are a few things to consider when looking on eBay to increase your chances of getting a quality device.

  • Clean ESN – Make sure that the seller specifically states that the ESN is clear for activation. If they don’t and it’s really a phone you want, send the seller a question and wait for their answer. Any promises sent by a seller through eBay messages in regards to an item is binding and protects you once received, even if not on the listing description.
  • Software Modifications: Many sellers will take phones from other carriers and conduct software modifications such as PRL hacks, ESN cloning, ROM changes and flashing techniques. You need to be aware of that modifications like these can limit the features you can use and become reset if you do a factory restore on the device at some point in the future. It’s usually best to stay away from these if at all possible! How can you tell? Metro PCS phone usually always have a Metro PCS logo somewhere on the front or back of the device. In addition to the the “splash screen” once the device is powered on. If you don’t see any logos on the housing or on the power on cycle, then you should be cautious.
  • Company vs Individual: Companies who sell used metro pcs phones do so in bulk in many cases. They don’t always have the time or procedure to check every feature of the phone outside of the most basic features. While this isn’t always the case, read the description for just exactly what works and what they’ve tested for. When I really need a device, I’m usually willing to spend a little more and purchase from the actual end user that used the cell phone and puts a story behind when they bought it, how they took care of it and describe clearly that all of the functions work, even if the phones costs a little bit more money.
  • eBay Item Condition, Warranty/Returns Policy – Only buy phones in the used or above category. Anything in the “For parts or not working” category can have troubles if you later need to file a dispute. Also take a look at the sellers returns policy. They might not describe it in the description but all cell phone items are required to specify their returns policy these days.
  • Consider Top Rated Sellers – I usually have two rules. Buy from an individual who gives a clear history of the phone or buy from a company or individual that’s a top rated seller.
  • Use Best Offer: Many sellers will have a “Best Offer” option on their listing. Don’t be afraid to find these and offer a reasonable lower price than their Buy It Now price. Many times they’ve set the Buy It Now price high, but have a much lower price to auto accept. Remember that making a “Best Offer” is the same as making a bid or committing to buy an item. Not all sellers have the auto accept/decline setup and might take several hours or days to approve or deny. You don’t want to fire off too many because multiple sellers could accept after you’ve purchased one.
